PVC card printing is one of the highest margin services for citizen service centers, DTP hubs, and CSC Digital Seva Kendras. However, direct-to-card dye-sublimation thermal printers like the Evolis Zenius, Zebra ZC300, and Magicard 300 require strict maintenance to prevent printhead burnout.
Cleaning Rollers and Printheads
Thermal printheads operate at temperatures exceeding 180°C. Microscopic dust particles on blank PVC cards or inside the card feeder create hot spots that burn out individual heating elements, resulting in permanent white vertical lines across printed cards. Use an isopropanol cleaning pen every 250 cards or immediately after installing a new ribbon cartridge.
Why Do Ribbons Tear?
Ribbon tearing typically happens due to: excessive printhead temperature settings in the driver, using non-standard thick cards (stick with 300 micron CR80 standard), or misaligned card feed rollers. If a tear occurs, wind the ribbon forward two full turns, splice it neatly with transparent cellophane tape, and recalibrate the ribbon sensor.
Recommended Storage for Blank Cards
Store blank CR80 PVC cards in sealed ziplock bags inside an air-conditioned room or sealed container. Static charge attracts airborne dust, which ruins ribbon adhesion and produces patchy colors on citizen photos.
